Tailgators Setup Podcast: Week 9

Close calls; ugly wins; and the Buckeyes win again
Georgia begins quest for 3rd straight championship as No. 1 in AP Top 25. Michigan, Ohio State next | Georgia Public Broadcasting
COCKTAIL PARTY?: Undefeated Georgia and quarterback Carson Beck continue the march toward a third straight national championship when they take on Florida (5-2) in the World’s Largest Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, Fla. on Saturday. / Source: AP/Brett Davis

Hot Topics of the Week: Let’s talk briefly about…

Latest AP Top 5: 1. Georgia; 2. Michigan; 3. Ohio State; 4. Florida State; 5. Washington

Franklin’s Got To Go: His record against Ohio St. and Michigan is atrocious. His record in big games is maybe worse. The Lions are now 4-15 against Ohio State and Michigan under Franklin, who is 80-22 against everyone else while at the school. And after 10 years of it, the Penn State faithful have lost their patience.

Lincoln Riley too?: Same thing here. Riley is a great offensive coach but he’s never had a defense ever. And at two big schools like Oklahoma and USC that shouldn’t happen. He looks like an NFL bound coach-in-waiting.1

Survival Saturday: Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, Tulane, FSU, Oregon, Ole Miss all struggled against lesser opponents and Iowa fell in a weird fashion in a game they struggled in. What was going on?

B1G Tie-Breaker: What if…Penn State somehow beats Michigan in Happy Valley; Michigan beats Ohio State in The Game? All three would have 1 loss, assuming they all win out. What’s the tie-breaker scenario in the B1G? Could all three be in the CFP?

Carolina Blues: The Tarheels once again choke as a Top 10 ranked team. Is last week’s loss to Virginia a program-defining loss?

Game of the Week:

Oregon 73-67 Utah (Jan 26, 2017) Final Score - ESPN

8 Oregon at 13 Utah 3:30 p.m. on FOX: Only one of two match-ups between ranked opponents this week. Can Oregon’s offense score against Utah’s defense? Can Utah score like they did against USC or is the USC defense just that poor? Cam Rising is officially shut down for the year.

This Week’s Top 5 (2023 Record in Parenthesis):

Other games to watch:

1 Georgia at Florida 3:30 p.m. on CBS: Is this Georgia’s toughest game so far? How will Brock Bowers’ injury affect the game?

20 Duke at 18 Louisville 3:30 p.m. on ESPN: Duke’s loss to FSU takes some of the intrigue and luster off this game. Does Riley Leonard need to be done for the season with his ankle?

21 Tennessee at Kentucky 7 p.m. on ESPN: John, does this game still have SEC title implications?

5 Washington at Stanford 7 p.m. on FS1: Could Stanford pull off another upset? Washington seemed to struggle last week.

John’s Underdog of the Week:

Florida Baby! Enough is enough, there’s only so much Georgia (-14.5) dominance I can take. Give me my Duff beer and white polo shirt and call me Homer! (Brian asks: Are you taking the Gators outright, or with the points?)

Read John’s take on Hate Week here:

Brian’s Pick: Washington (-26.5) at Stanford. I know Penix Jr. is John’s boy, but wIth the way Washington played last week and how Stanford has looked the last few weeks, gimme the points!

Heisman Trophy Watch: Consensus front-runner Michael Penix Jr., how did he fare last week against Arizona State?

2024 NFL Draft Player Profile: Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. - AthlonSports.com | Expert Predictions, Picks, and Previews
JUST LIKE DAD: Marvin Harrison Jr. entered the Heisman Trophy race with his performance (11 REC, 162 YDS, 1 TD) in the Buckeyes’ 20-12 win against Penn State on Saturday. / Source: Athlon Sports

Who aren’t we talking about? J.J McCarthy? I think more mystery folks can step into this spotlight by playing well down the stretch. (Brian asks: Is there a possible defensive player who can sneak their way into the Heisman conversation?)

Caleb Williams Another loss.(QB, USC), Jayden Daniels (QB, LSU), Quinn Ewers Wll miss time. (QB, Texas), Jordan Travis (QB, FSU), Shadeur Sanders (QB, COL), Michael Penix Jr. (QB, Washington), Bo Nix (QB, OR) Ray Davis (RB, KY), Brock Bowers Injured. (TE, Georgia), Dillon Gabriel (QB, OU), Carson Beck (QB, Georgia), J.J. McCarthy (QB, Michigan), Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR, Ohio St.)

According to Caesers Sportsbook, the odds to win the Heisman Trophy:

“131 teams. Only 1 will survive.”
