As last Saturday turned into Sunday and the games finished up the page turned for me especially. It was the lead up to Hate Week! Florida vs Georgia kicks off in the World’s Largest Cocktail Party on Saturday at 3:30 on CBS.
Rivalries are heated, states hate each other (looking at you Ohio and Michigan!) and for one team a year of gloating and the other a year of despair.
For Florida fans the last couple of years have been rough. Not only have we suffered losing but we had to go on to watch Georgia win back to back National Championships. You talk about a nauseous feeling, and thats what rivalries bring out in you.
I’ve said it before and I mean it, if Florida went 1-11 every year, as long as that 1 win is Georgia, I’d be happy. I was introduced to this one in the 80’s and suffered for a decade as Herschel Walker and Georgia owned Florida for a decade. Then a hero arrived in Gainesville, returned actually, as our favorite son Steve Spurrier returned and lead Florida to two decades of it being Florida’s turn. But since Kirby Smart has arrived Georgia has been on a mission and he’s done an unbelievable job of completing that mission, much to my dismay.
So that leads to this years match up. Georgia is the reigning king of college football, but maybe not as dominant and the past two seasons. But they’ve given Florida hope in an unfortunate turn with Brock Bowers being injured. Florida is (seemingly) trying to turn a corner. They’ve show some grit lately. And what better to announce the corner is turned than beating the king for the first time in 20 games. They have a punchers chance. They’re young playing the most freshmen in the country this year. There’s promise and the glimmer of hope is overwhelming but is it just a red herring for Florida fans?
Who knows! But it’s time to gear up and root for you team until the cows come home. And either bask in the awesomeness of a victory or wallow in sadness by losing to your bitter rival.
I think it’s time to end the reign. And wouldn’t it be great if we got that cherry on top?
