The Opening Drive

1st Down: Fire Billy. Our Florida Gator homer gets on his soapbox to vent about this past weekend’s 18-16 loss to the South Florida Bulls. Factoid: It was Florida's first defeat at home against a school from Florida, other than Florida State or Miami, since a 16-14 loss to Stetson in 1938. The Gators have four straight games against ranked opponents: at No. 3 LSU, at No. 5 Miami, home against No. 7 Texas and at No. 19 Texas A&M.

  • Napier is 20-20 at Florida. Previous Gators coaches after their first 40 games: Dan Mullen 31-9, Jim McElwain 22-12 *fired before game 40, Will Muschamp 24-16, Urban Meyer 31-9.

So, this week’s recap will be different.

2nd Down: Sneaky Weekend. Mississippi State upsets Arizona St. USF stuns Florida. Ohio takes down Rich Rod and West Virginia, while Oklahoma handles Michigan at home. Baylor upends SMU 48-45. Not exactly what we were expecting.

3rd Down: Same Faces, New Places: Rob Ryan is DC in USC. Beau Pribula: 617 yards, 5 TDs, 88.1 QBR, went from Penn State to Missouri (Meanwhile, Drew Allar has 417 yards, 3 TDs, and 60.0 QBR). John Mateer, Washington State to Oklahoma, is one of John’s leading Heisman candidates.

4th Down: See Your Way Out: Mike Gundy (OK St.). Billy Napier (Florida). Brenty Pry (Virginia Tech). Kalen DeBoer (Bama). DeShaun Foster (UCLA). Who will be the first coach to go? Gundy “poured gasoline on the fire” according to Ducks coach Dan Lanning. This is making me feel like we won’t have to wait until the Ohio State game for Penn State to lose it’s first game of the year.

Extra Point: Haley M. Sawyer: At AP poll voter has caused a stink with her poll, which had Florida moving up 2 spots in the rankings following the loss to USF, while the Bulls remained unranked.

2 Point Conversion: LSU’s 66-year-old freshman band member, Kent Broussard, is a retired accountant. He saw The Golden Band from Tigerland perform as a child, and always dreamed of being a member of the band. “People retire, dreams don’t,” he told the AP.
