Week 2: Nick Saban's Not Here to Save Us

The Showdown in the Shoe, Belichick gets schooled and Bama gets upset

Intro: Tonight! We review the showdown in the shoe… LSU makes claim to Death Valley…Has the luck run out for Notre Dame?…Bill Belichick gets taken back to school…And Nick Saban’s Not Here to Save Us!…It’s Tailgators on two…hut-hut.

The Opening Drive

1st Down: Great Expectations. From Arch Manning to Alabama to Bill Belichick, the opening week of college football revealed some ugly truths about where each of them stand. Who should be most concerned?

  • Arch Manning: 17/30 170 yards. 1 TD 1 INT.

  • Alabama gets handled 31-17 by Florida State. FSU QB Castellanos said earlier this summer, when discussing the Tide, “Nick Saban’s not around to save them.” Truly, this is not the same Alabama program, which is 5-5 in its last 10 games, as it was under Nick Saban. Is there any way for Kalen DeBoer to right this ship?

  • Bill Belichick goes from the Promised Land to the third ring of Hell in the matter of three quarters. Max Johnson’s comeback story.

2nd Down: The AP Poll. We all know John loves polls, but this week Alabama is ranked 21st. Florida is ranked 13th. Can John remember when was the last time the Gators were ranked ahead of the Tide? Should Bama even be in the Top 25?

3rd Down: Kudos: To ESPN, Fox and Ohio State for Lee Corso’s sendoff, and for all of the schools who took on ranked opponents during Week 1.

4th Down: Story about the Army football player, Larry Pickett Jr., who along with his father saved a man from a fiery wreck over the weekend.

The Heisman Watch:

What’s the saying, “You can’t win on the first play, but you sure can lose it.” Or something like that.

Anyway, Brian thinks it’s safe to say Arch Manning and Cade Klubnick just eliminated themselves from being considered for the Heisman Trophy this year. On the otherhand, a few players stood out last weekend.

Josh Hoover, QB, TCU: 27/36 284 yards, 2 TDs in 48-14 victory over UNC.

Carson Beck, QB, Miami: Led Miami to a win against Notre Dame and looked good while doing it. Is Beck back from elbow injury?

Julian Sayin, QB, Ohio State: Dropped No. 1 Texas at home and showed why Nick Saban might be the best evaluator of QB talent.

Garrett Nussmeier, QB, LSU: Came out victorious in a showdown of Heisman-favorite QBs.

Devon Dampier, QB, Utah: Led Utes to 43-10 victory over Nico Iamaleava and UCLA.

Rocco Becht, QB, Iowa St.: 19/20 278 yards, 3 TDs against South Dakota in 55-7 stomping last week. Already has a big win against Kansas State in Ireland.
