Week 4: Welcome to the Big Ten

The Longhorns take over the top sport, Arch Manning shows out; troubles continue at Florida and Florida St., and we're drinking Gary's Kool-Aid

Hello fellow college football fan! Welcome to Tailgators Setup Podcast, a weekly look into the great game we love. Please be so kind as to subscribe to our Substack and leave us a comment about what you think.

Arch Manning threw a TD and ran for a long TD on his first three plays
BULL LOOSE: Arch Manning and the Longhorns ran away from UTSA this past weekend.

Four Downs:

1st Down: The Quinn Ewers Injury. What does this mean for the Longhorns? Is Arch Manning the real deal? A good showing against UTSA doesn’t mean much. Brian, meanwhile, unleashes a wild(?) conspiracy theory…

2nd Down: Biggest upset of the Week? Washington St. over Washington? Toledo over Mississippi St. Discussion revolves around the impact NIL might be having on player performance, and the psychology of success.

3rd Down: Best uniforms so far? Brian’s wife and 9-year-old son both commented on Kentucky’s uniforms Saturday night. John and Gary, meanwhile, prefer Oregon’s wild attire.

4th Down: After Brian and Gary let John finish his beer, we ask him about the current situation with Billy Napier and the Florida Gators. John says Napier is Dead Man Walking, so Brian asks, “Who is going to replace him?”

John’s Game(s) of the Week:

USC Trojans at Michigan Wolverines Football - tickets - by dealer - event sale - craigslist

This is a loaded week of Top 25 match-ups. An embarrassment of riches. We start with a classic Rose Bowl match-up, with No. 11 USC at No. 18 Michigan (3:30 p.m. CBS), in the Trojans’ first B1G game.

Then we move on to the other games involving two ranked teams:

No. 24 Illinois at No. 22 Nebraska (8 p.m. Friday FOX)

No. 12 Utah at No. 14 Oklahoma St. (4 p.m. FOX)

No. 6 Tennessee at No. 15 Oklahoma (7:30 p.m. ABC)

The “Just For Men” (#notsponsored) Pick ‘em Challenge:

Listen and play along with the guys as they pick winners for this week’s upcoming games. Remember, the loser must dye their beard Ryan Day Black for one podcast at the end of the season.

Brian maintains a one game advantage over Gary and John after three weeks.

Current Standings:

Brian (24-15), John (23-16), Gary (23-16)

Over/Under:

Iowa at Minnesota (7:30 p.m. NBC) — O/U 36.5 as of Monday morning.

Heisman Watch:

Jaxson Dart - Football - Ole Miss Athletics - Hotty Toddy
STRIKE A POSE: Ole Miss QB Jaxon Dart has put up Heisman-like numbers during the first three games of the season.

Ashton Jeanty, Boise State: He didn’t play this week, but Boise State still won! Welcome to the Pac-12 Broncos.

Travis Hunter, Colorado: Hunter is at least the Most Valuable Player in college football. With 13 catches for 100 yards, 2 touchdowns, an interception, 5 tackles and a pass breakup against in-state rival Colorado State on Saturday night, Hunter makes a strong claim to be at the Downtown Athletic Club in December.

Cam Ward, Miami: Ward continued to impress last week’s 62-0 victory over Ball St. with 346 yards and 5 TDs passing.

Jalen Milroe, Alabama: Three TDs in the air, and two on the ground, in a statement performance against Wisconsin on the road.

Jaxon Dart, Ole Miss: The Rebels quarterback had his third straight 300+ yard passing game last week, has thrown 8 TDs on the year, with an 83% completion rate.
