I wonder what this one could be about?
Florida homer rollicks in the afterglow of a (basketball) national championship
Buckle up people, this homer gets to ride his high horse for a bit!
So maybe not football, but it’s rarified air for any school to celebrate a national championship, like my Gators got to do on Monday night, bringing home “the Natty,” as Coach Golden screamed!
What a tournament it was for the University of Florida.
They played with a grit that was unmatched for three straight weekends. And before that, they did the same to the king conference of college basketball this season, the SEC, and won that tourney title too!
For all the talk of the SEC being down in college football, it’s definitely not the case in baskets right now.
Fourteen teams from the SEC made the field of 64. Seven of those made it to the Sweet 16, 4 made the Great Eight, and 2 in the Final Four. It’s unheard of in the sport.1 It’s historic. And remember, the Gators slogged through it all. It wasn’t always pretty, but they never doubted and stayed the course.
So how can it be that the mighty SEC is now a basketball conference?
Well, don’t bet on football staying down for long. Athletic directors are watching. No football coach or program is going to want to be robbed by their basketball brethren. This could be a wake-up call for them.
Schools should be looking at what works with both major sports (and every other sport they have). Pool the resources. Make your school THE place to be, for everything.
But for now, I get to bask in the glorious afterglow, and maybe mention to one DJ Lagway that the last time this happened a guy named Tebow came back to win a football title at the end of the next season.
Crazier things have happened.
Oh and one more history note:
Have a good night folks!
The 1985 Final Four had three teams from the Big East: Villanova, Georgetown, and St. John’s.
