The SEC has had a down year for their outlandish standards. Alabama lost to Texas and the questions began about is the dynasty over. Now the current kings of college football, Georgia (oh god I actually said that!), finds themselves facing renewed adversity by losing All-World tight end Brock Bowers just in time for them to hit the meat of their schedule with Florida, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee their next four games.
Georgia stands at the precipice of being knocked off the perch. While I’d love it to be Florida to take them out next week that would open an all new scenario for the SEC. The East side of the bracket is still up for grabs. Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt have been eliminated from winning the division. Florida lost to Kentucky, Missouri lost to Tennessee and Tennessee lost to Florida. Florida still plays Georgia and Missouri and Missouri and Tennessee still have to play Georgia. I don’t see a scenario where the East champ doesn’t have a loss. But what if a two loss Florida was the one who gets through? And they potentially have a third loss to FSU. Now the conference is relying on Alabama to win out, and that’s not a cinch either.
Alabama has to play Tennessee this week, and LSU is looming. Both of those games they can lose. LSU has two losses, Texas A&M, Auburn, Mississippi State and Arkansas are all awful. And Ole Miss lost to Bama so they would have to lose two SEC games to win the West.
So does this mean the SEC has regressed? Or is more likely that the rest of the league is catching up to the kings and the the kings are falling back? I think it’s the later. It seems every team has a spot or two. Auburn needs a QB to get back. Florida’s playing 9 freshmen or sophomores on defense. LSU’s defense isn’t very good. But they’re all young. And working to get better. That goes for Alabama and Georgia too. Both of them are breaking in new QB’s.
So, rest of the college football world, take your shots now. I don’t think the SEC has a playoff team this year. Savor it! Cause it probably won’t last long.
ESPN would never let an SEC team NOT be in the playoff.
